Climbing Nevado Maparaju

Maparaju (5,320m/17,454ft), located at the head of the Quilkayhuanca ravine, is the perfect summit to get acclimated. There you can enjoy breathtaking views of the summits of Cayesh, Huantsán, San Juan and other mountains. Its ascent does not require previous experience mountaineering.

Day 01: Huaraz – Pitec – Maparaju Base Camp (4,100m/13,448ft)

After breakfast in the hotel, you will board our private bus, and drive to Pitec, east of Huaraz. We will passby small villages like Nueva Florida, Uncus and Llupa, and arrive at the Quilcayhuanca entrance around 10am. We will start hiking for about 3h30, enjoying the views of some of the most impressive pics of the Cordillera Blanca. We will stop for lunch at 12pm, then continue hiking up for about 2h to Base Camp of Maparaju. Overnight camping at 4100m.

Day 2: Base Camp – Maparaju summit (5,326m/17,469ft) – Base Camp

We will have an early breakfast and start our ascent at 3 am. After about 3h, we will get to the glacier and equip ourselves with our climbing gear to start ice climbing. We will reach Maparaju summit (5326m/17469ft) after about 2h, around 8am. We will enjoy breathtaking views of the mountains Cayesh, Huantsan and San Juan (among others). Then we will head back down to Base Camp. Overnight camping at 4100m.

Day 3: Base Camp – hike out Quilcayhuanca valley – return to Huaraz

After breakfast, we will start our way back down along the Quilcayhuanca valley, have lunch about halfway through our hike in a nice spot. We will then reach the entrance where our bus back Huaraz will be waiting for us. Estimated arrival time in Huaraz: 4pm. Transfer to your hotel.
